Our Sizzling
Sex Survey Results
We received hundreds of replies to our survey, "What Do You
Do in Bed?"
Here's what you said turns you on...
The ages of respondents ranged from 16 to 53, the average being
28. Occupations varied from clerical workers to business owners,
and included a horticulturist, an exotic dancer, and two librarians.
And one thing was certain, no matter how old or what your occupation--you
all love sex. 65% of them said that they engage in it often, with
nearly 40% having it twice a week, 12% having it every day and 13%
having it 4 to 5 times per week. The favored position is missionary
or man on top, with another 22% preferring woman on top and 14%
enjoying doggie style.
What is the most
unusual place you ever make love?
Departing from the ordinary bedroom, unusual places you enjoy making
love include nature settings like the beach, the woods, the snow,
under a waterfall, on a country road, in a thunderstorm, in a forest
preserve, on top of a mountain, in a canoe, and in a cemetery. Some
very unusual places included: while parachuting from a plane, on
a high school football field, in a Burger King bathroom, in a K-Mart
dressing room, on the kitchen stove, and on the washing machine
during the spin cycle. Some reported very unconventional lovemaking
styles, from masturbating at a fancy restaurant to incorporating
food items like popsicles, cucumbers and bananas into the ritual.
How often do you
masturbate?
During intercourse, 61% of you use self-stimulation and 27% say
you masturbate 1 to 3 times a week, with another 8% applying manual
dexterity up to 5 times weekly. At the opposite extreme, another
8% of you enjoy self-pleasuring only two to three times a month.
And masturbation seems to enjoy some friendly help from gadgets
like vibrators, popular with 46%, and dildos, a favorite with 39%.
Masturbation is not always a private affair for 51% whose mates
are often present during the act. Why not? Up to 60% of you watch
him perform the act!
While the style of masturbation differs according to personal preference,
a whopping 46% said they needed clitoral stimulation either with
or without insertion of fingers, vibrators, and dildos.
What is your favorite
fantasy?
Fantasies in general were a welcome part of your repertoire. In
particular, they were the happily-ever-after images where knight
rescues damsel in distress. One reader conjures up a limo driver
asking her to pull her car over as a wealthy, handsome man in the
back of the limo confesses his undying love for her. They make passionate
love and live happily ever after. While sex fantasies with other
men may be titillating, the most popular visions for 74% of you
included sex with another woman.
Threesomes were an enjoyable fantasy, most of which included one
man and two women. Another favorite image included sex in public
with the implicit danger of being caught. In the name of domination,
additional fantasy responses included: "being a sex slave,"
"being swept off my feet," and "being tied up, blindfolded
. . . while caught on video," thereby mixing the whim for display
with the wish to be conquered.
When asked about fantasies involving men other than their mate,
answers ranged from a preference for total strangers to your mate's
best friend, from your exes to men you work with, from bad boys
to next door neighbors, from men in uniform to other women, from
your boss to athletes and celebrities. The five most popular star
fantasies included Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt,
and Richard Gere. 13% of our readers said they have no fantasies
at all, and a few women confessed they couldn't imagine being with
anyone other than their mate.
Most of you felt secure enough in your relationships to tell your
fantasies to your partners or at least to offer him hints. But some
women were reluctant to share their fantasies with their partner
for fear it would ruin the relationship. A few who did take the
risk found that their men were offended that they might be getting
bored with them, some men even accusing their women of having sick
desires.
Have you ever made
love with another woman?
27% of you said that you had made your fantasies of making love
with another woman come true, with 11% having done it only once.
Many of you called your same-sex encounters "fun," and
some included the participation of opposite-sex mates.
Have you ever had
a threesome?
46% of you actually made your threesome fantasies into realities,
with some of them crossing the line of tradition: Both husbands
and boyfriends invited their friends to participate with their wives
and girlfriends. But one threesome included a brother and his roommate,
and another included a husband and his boss. Many times drunkenness
was blamed for how it came about, and some people expressed remorse
after the liquor wore off. But because most admitted that both you
and your partners had wanted the threesome, some pre- planned the
event with special rules beforehand, such as no kissing and taking
an AIDS test with proof of results. Overall, feelings about three-way
sex varied from "boring" to "scary" to "thrilling"
to "mind-blowing."
How often do you
reach orgasm when you're making love?
Answers ranged from "rarely" to "not often"
to "pretty often" to "every time we have sex."
Many respondents mentioned oral sex as key to their getting off,
along with the use of vibrators, dildos, masturbation, porn movies,
and sex talk. When asked if you could reach orgasm through intercourse
alone, 52% said yes, yet the frequency of your fantasies and your
desire for sex toys told another story.
Do you ever fake
orgasms?
When asked if you fake orgasms, 49% of you said no, one respondent
making the distinction: "only with my husband, not with my
lover." Others gave reasons for engaging in the Faux O: "to
let him know he still arouses me," "so he'll hurry up,"
"because I'm exhausted," "not to upset him,"
and "to get it over with when I'm with a boring partner."
How often do you
and your partner perform oral sex on each other?
As a group, you generally enjoy performing oral sex, but many of
you complain that the favor is not reciprocated as often as you
would like. Nevertheless, many of you credit oral sex as an important
means for achieving orgasm, with 59% admitting you engage in a special
technique like "69" that especially works for you and
your partner.
Do you and your mate
use sex toys during intercourse?
Not unlike the high percentage of women who use sex toys to masturbate
(46% with vibrators, 39% with dildos), 51% of you said you use a
vibrator during intercourse, with over half the respondents reporting
they use devices such as dildos, feathers, lace, satin, beads, candles,
whips, ropes, handcuffs, lotions, hot oil, anal probes, whipped
cream, blindfolds, chocolate, cock rings, and French ticklers. Visually
stimulated as well, 75% of you said you enjoy x-rated movies.
Those of you who responded to our survey are comfortable with your
bodies, sexually adventurous, and anxious to give and receive pleasure.
You are spontaneous, exciting, and communicative with your partners.
A few, whose partners are unsatisfying, openly admit to having lovers
on the side. It's clear to us that when it comes to sex, you ask
for what you want and believe you deserve to get it.
